Sister of Devoted Councillor Waseem Zaffar Steps Up to Continue His Legacy in Lozells

Samarah Zaffar is standing as the Labour candidate in the upcoming Birmingham council elections for the Lozells ward, aiming to carry on the legacy of her brother, the late Waseem Zaffar.

Waseem Zaffar, a dedicated Birmingham Labour councillor, passionate clean air advocate, and proud Villa football fan, passed away at age 44 earlier this year. His untimely death was met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, community members, and political leaders who praised his unwavering commitment to the people of Lozells.

In a heartfelt social media statement, Samarah expressed both sorrow and determination as she embarks on this journey: “After my brother’s sudden passing, I want to continue his incredible work for this ward. I’m passionate about supporting families and ensuring every voice in Lozells is heard and valued.”

Her campaign emphasizes building on Waseem’s fierce love for the community. “He taught me that when you stand up, you are counted,” Samarah said. “I’m standing to protect our youth centres, honor our elders with dignity, and invest in a cleaner, safer Lozells – because we must step up. No more division, here or anywhere.”

Key priorities she highlights include keeping streets clean, cutting crime, and fostering a thriving community safe for all residents.

Birmingham Council leader John Cotton remembered Waseem Zaffar as “a passionate advocate of his community, a devoted father and husband, and a young man with so much more to give.” Labour MPs Preet Kaur Gill, Liam Byrne, and Sarah Coombes also paid moving tributes to the late councillor, underscoring his impactful role in local politics.

Lozells faces significant challenges including fly-tipping, drug use, and economic hardship, leaving some residents feeling hopeless. Independent candidate Rafael Costa voiced the community’s yearning for positive change, emphasizing respect and fresh ideas for the area.

The local elections on May 7 will determine control of Birmingham City Council’s 101 seats, with Labour defending power against Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens, Reform UK, independents, and others.

Samarah Zaffar’s candidacy represents both a heartfelt tribute and a bold commitment to carry forward her brother’s passion for a cleaner, safer, and united Lozells community.
