Sir Keir Starmer Announces VAT Cut on Family Meals and Days Out at Wetherspoons and Beyond

The Labour government, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has unveiled a significant VAT reduction impacting all Wetherspoons pubs and a wide range of family activities across the UK. This new measure aims to ease the financial burden on families by lowering taxes on meals and entertainment, making outings more affordable and memorable.

Under the scheme, prices for children’s menu meals served on-site at restaurants, including Wetherspoons, will be reduced. Additionally, discounted admission will apply to children’s and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, exhibitions, and a broad spectrum of attractions such as amusement parks, museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, adventure parks, nature reserves, wildlife parks, and observation decks.

Prime Minister Starmer highlighted the real impact of rising costs on family life: “The cost of living isn’t just about paying bills—it’s about being able to afford the moments that matter with your family. Whether it’s a trip to the cinema, a day out, or a family meal, many parents have had to cut back due to budget pressures. That’s why we’re cutting VAT on family days out this summer.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting families during the challenging summer months: “I understand the cost of living is the top concern for families, especially during school holidays when expenses rise. We want to make it easier for families to create lasting memories and enjoy small treats, while also boosting businesses across the country.”

Reeves also noted that these measures build on previous efforts, including freezing fuel duty, reducing energy bills by £117, and maintaining prescription and rail fare freezes. She credited the government’s economic plan for enabling these initiatives, pointing out that the UK currently boasts the fastest growing economy in the G7.

This VAT cut reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to improving family affordability and supporting local businesses as the nation navigates the cost of living challenges.
