Solihull planners have granted retrospective permission to Old Edwardians Sports Club (OESC) Ltd in Shirley for an outdoor exercise area constructed on a previously unused grassy space. The Streetsbrook Road-based club, known for its cricket and rugby teams and community events, initially built the open-air fitness facility without seeking prior approval.
The club formally applied for planning permission in summer 2024, coupled with an apology for the retrospective submission. OESC director Mike Allport explained in the application: “We were unaware that this type of open-air construction required formal planning consent. The site is hidden from public view by green hedges, does not border any public roads, and requires minimal maintenance, lighting, or additional access facilities.”
The facility offers 45-minute bootcamp sessions scheduled throughout the week. Despite two objections from nearby residents citing potential neighborhood disturbance and highway concerns, council planning officers concluded that the fitness area would not adversely affect neighboring amenity due to the distance from residential properties and a comprehensive noise management strategy.

Furthermore, the council’s highways officer confirmed that existing onsite parking—often underutilized—would sufficiently accommodate up to 30 visitors expected at peak times. Convenient public transport options are also within walking distance of the site.
The outdoor exercise and equipment storage area was deemed compliant with local planning policies, leading Mark Andrews, Solihull Council’s head of planning, design and engagement, to grant permission subject to conditions in February.
The official planning documents remain accessible via the council’s website under reference PL/2024/01501/PPFL.
