Seven Asda and Hobbycraft Products Recalled Over Asbestos Concerns

Seven products from Asda and Hobbycraft have been recalled across the UK due to fears they may contain traces of asbestos. Both retailers have emphasized the importance of stopping use immediately and taking protective measures during disposal, such as wearing gloves and masks.

Asda has recalled two children’s toys after discovering potential contamination in the sand used inside the products. While the overall risk is deemed low, Asda acknowledges that “asbestos should not be present in any amount” and is acting out of an abundance of caution to ensure safety and quality.

Hobbycraft, which operates stores in Birmingham and Solihull, has also issued a recall for several craft kits. They are advising parents to wear gloves and masks and to double-bag the sand, gloves, masks, and any cleaning cloths when disposing of the affected items.

An Asda spokesperson explained: “Testing identified trace levels of asbestos in the sand-like material inside some toys. Though no harm has been reported, we are recalling these items as a precaution in line with our strict safety standards.”

The recalled Hobbycraft items include:

  • My Living World Worm Kit (Product code: 5830641000)
  • Basing Sand (Product code: 6873931000)
  • Sand & Pom Pom Art Kit
  • Easter Bumper Craft Kit (Product code: 6669851000)
  • Giant Box of Craft (Product code: 6835991000)

The recalled Asda toys are:

  • Stretch Squad Assortment (Barcode: 5050837662419)
  • Slammers Assortment (Barcode: 5050835105345)

The concern arose after a parent sent samples of coloured sand from the Giant Box of Craft kit for laboratory testing, which revealed traces of asbestos fibers in yellow, green, and pink sand.

Consumers in possession of these products are advised to stop using them immediately and follow the recommended safety precautions during disposal.
