‘Serious Harm’ Warning from Birmingham Pharmacist as Unlicensed Weight Loss Injection Seizures Surge

A Birmingham pharmacist has issued a stark warning about the dangers of purchasing weight loss injections from unlicensed online sellers. Ahsan Bhatti, superintendent pharmacist at Frankley Pharmacy in Rubery, highlighted the alarming rise in illegally sourced medications and the sophisticated tactics used by these sellers, including employing artificial intelligence to target vulnerable individuals seeking quick weight loss solutions.

According to data obtained through a Freedom of Information request, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reported a dramatic increase in seizures of falsified or unlicensed weight loss injections, rising from 407 in early 2023 to a staggering 5,851 last year. This surge underscores the growing presence of illicit suppliers throughout the UK.

“Weight-loss medicines are prescription-only for good reason,” Bhatti explained. “These powerful treatments require comprehensive clinical assessments and continuous monitoring to ensure safety and efficacy. Sadly, many people fall prey to websites and social media sellers offering cheaper, unregulated injections with no proper medical oversight.”

Legitimate UK pharmacies must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and must prominently display their registration details, the name of their superintendent pharmacist, and a valid physical UK address. Bhatti warns consumers to be cautious of any seller that bypasses medical consultations or offers prescriptions without thorough health evaluations.

“Any trustworthy pharmacy will conduct a detailed medical questionnaire to assess a patient’s suitability for treatment, including their medical history and existing conditions. Skipping this crucial step puts patients at serious risk,” he added.

The dangers of using unregulated weight loss medications include incorrect dosing, contamination, and unknown harmful ingredients. Moreover, without proper medical guidance, patients might miss early warnings of side effects or adverse reactions, potentially leading to severe health complications.

“Weight-loss medicines are not a one-size-fits-all remedy,” Bhatti stressed. “Only qualified healthcare professionals can determine when these treatments are appropriate. Taking a moment to verify credentials and the legitimacy of the provider can be the difference between safe use and serious harm.”
