Plans to convert the historic Hatherton House in Walsall into a 17-bedroom House of Multiple Occupation (HMO) have been officially approved. The project, led by Sue Boden of the Walsall NHS Trust, aims to provide much-needed quality accommodation for NHS staff in the area.
Hatherton House, a mid-19th century building situated within the Lichfield Street Conservation Area, has a storied past. Once operating as a nursery, the building famously featured vibrant polka-dot decorations from 2013 until 2018, when it was restored to its traditional white exterior. Most recently, the building served as offices for Skills Training UK before going on sale in early 2024 with an asking price near £495,000.
Under the approved plans, the property will be transformed into 17 bedrooms, including six with en-suite bathrooms. The remaining 11 rooms will share toilet and washing facilities. Communal amenities will include a utility room on the ground floor, a study room on the first floor, and shared kitchens on both levels. Additionally, the site will accommodate 14 parking spaces.

Ms. Boden emphasized the importance of quality accommodation for NHS staff, citing her personal experience with the lack of suitable housing in the area. The conversion will retain the building’s external appearance, with only minor and reversible alterations made to preserve its historic character.
Agent En-plan highlighted the benefits of the scheme, stating that reusing the heritage building will not only protect it from deterioration caused by neglect but also enhance the character and setting of the conservation area. The project delivers essential housing in a sustainable, town-centre location while respecting the architectural and historical significance of Hatherton House.
