A horrific crash near Birmingham City’s football ground left a mother trapped and critically injured after a reckless Audi driver exceeded the speed limit and caused a massive collision.
Azam Adal, 30, was driving at speeds up to 90mph on a 30mph road along Cattell Road when he dangerously overtook another vehicle on a blind bend. His Audi S3 collided with a Toyota Yaris pulling out from Arsenal Street, causing severe damage and injuries.
After witnessing the devastating aftermath, Adal had a stranger, a motorist he had just passed, drive him away from the scene. He then contacted his brother-in-law, Luqmaan Ali, to collect the car keys and lie to police, falsely claiming the Audi had been stolen.

The front-seat passenger in the Toyota—a mother of two—was left trapped, screaming and bloodied, fighting for her life. She sustained life-changing injuries including a fractured skull, brain bleeding, broken ribs, pelvis, vertebrae, and damage to her liver and spleen. Her recovery has been long and painful, keeping her separated from her family for months.
The injured mother appeared in Birmingham Crown Court in March using a walker, a stark contrast to her previously happy family life filled with hopes of training as a nurse. The crash has severely affected her mental health, relationship with her children and husband, and her ability to live independently.
Adal pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to over three years in prison and banned from driving for more than six years. His brother-in-law, Ali, who admitted perverting the course of justice by assisting in the cover-up, received an 18-month sentence.
Prosecutors presented CCTV evidence showing the Audi speeding and crashing with a loud impact, highlighting Adal’s aggressive driving behavior. Collision investigators found Adal had been traveling at dangerously high speeds just moments before impact.
Judge Andrew Lockhart condemned Adal for prioritizing his own safety over those he injured, emphasizing the near-fatal consequences of his actions and the failed attempt to evade responsibility. The judge also highlighted Ali’s participation in the cover-up despite witnessing the crash scene firsthand.
Adal, who had previous convictions including robbery and car theft, expressed remorse in court, though the judge stressed the gravity and recklessness of his driving.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of dangerous driving and the importance of accountability on the roads.
