David Sheridan was devastated when Scottish Power demanded he pay a £500 energy bill just weeks after the death of his father, Robert. What made the situation even more distressing was that the energy company actually owed the family around £3,000.
“Just after my dad’s funeral, I received a bill for £506. I ignored it because I was told not to worry. Then, about a week later, a more threatening letter arrived,” David recalled.
Concerned, David called Scottish Power and was shocked to be warned that failure to pay some amount immediately could result in being blacklisted. “They didn’t seem to care at all about my dad’s passing — their focus was purely on collecting money,” he said.

The pressure was so intense that David ended up paying £10 by credit card, despite still being owed a significant credit. “I was extremely upset, almost in tears, to be hounded like that just after losing my dad. It was heartbreaking and completely unacceptable,” he added.
David also expressed fear that he might never recover the funds owed to his family.
In response, a Scottish Power spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry to Mr Sheridan for his loss and any distress caused during this difficult time. We have reached out to apologise and discuss how to ensure his credit is refunded promptly.”
