E-ACT Heartlands Academy in Birmingham has been honoured as Secondary School of the Year at the TES Awards 2026, recognizing its outstanding achievements in educating young people from some of England’s most disadvantaged backgrounds.
Located in Nechells, one of England’s most deprived wards, the school serves a community where 74% of students are classified as disadvantaged. Despite these challenges, Heartlands consistently surpasses national averages in every major category, including academic grades, student progress, and attendance.
In 2025, Heartlands’ disadvantaged pupils outperformed their non-disadvantaged peers nationally, with attendance soaring to an impressive 96.8%. The academy is also among a select few to retain an Outstanding rating across all four Ofsted categories under the previous inspection framework.

Beyond its own success, Heartlands has become a beacon of best practice nationally. The academy was one of the first to be designated a DfE RISE Behaviour and Attendance Hub, opening its doors to schools across the country to share effective strategies.
The school also runs a Community Hub offering family support and collaborating with organisations such as Barnardo’s, the Aston Villa Foundation, NHS services, and local police to enrich its pupils’ lives beyond the classroom.
