As the UK faces its third intense heatwave of the year, numerous schools across the Midlands and beyond are closing early or shutting down completely to protect students and staff. Following an unprecedented June heatwave last month that forced hundreds of closures, a similar situation is emerging.
The Met Office predicts the most severe conditions on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching up to 35C or 36C in parts of England. Amber heat health alerts have been issued for several regions, including the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the North West.
Currently, 18 schools in the UK are either closing early or remaining closed today, June 9, with some even canceling detentions for the remainder of the week. For example, Chawson Community First School in Droitwich, Worcestershire, has announced a full closure due to “extreme heat” inside the building.

Dorcan Academy in Swindon will close at 1 pm as a precaution. A school spokesperson explained that after monitoring weather forecasts and following guidance from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), they decided to adjust the school day to safeguard health. Detentions have been canceled until the end of the week, and early closures are planned during the peak temperatures.
Similarly, The Bridge School in Telford will finish early on Thursday and Friday. In Powys, three schools, including Llanfechain Community in Wales School near the Llanymynech border, will also close early. The Llanfechain school cited a lack of air conditioning and dangerously high classroom temperatures during recent hot weather as reasons for prioritizing the wellbeing of pupils and staff.
These precautionary measures highlight the ongoing challenges schools face in adapting to extreme weather conditions amid a changing climate.
