‘“Savage” attacker who bit off ear in Birmingham takeaway faces deportation’

Sharhad Rahmani, a 40-year-old Iranian national, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for biting part of a man’s ear during a violent attack in a Birmingham takeaway. The brutal assault left the victim, Shamal Abdullah, disfigured and has led to Rahmani facing imminent deportation.

The incident occurred at around 9 pm on April 14, 2024, outside Spices takeaway on Soho Road. Rahmani, together with two other men, pursued Mr. Abdullah after a confrontation with one of the attackers who threatened him with a bottle. The victim sought refuge inside the takeaway, but the attackers forced their way in, violently attacking him. Rahmani was the assailant responsible for biting off part of Mr. Abdullah’s ear, causing significant injury and bleeding.

During the court hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Peter Cooke condemned Rahmani’s actions as “savage” and noted his disrespectful behavior, including hurling insults during sentencing. Rahmani has a history of offending with 29 prior convictions, while the victim had no criminal record. Despite Rahmani’s defense citing his difficult background and struggles with isolation, substance misuse, and remorse, the judge dismissed these in light of his conduct and attitude during the trial.

Following his prison term, Rahmani is set to be handed over to immigration authorities, who are expected to pursue his deportation. The judge emphasized that while Rahmani will serve half his sentence, his release into the community is unlikely due to the immigration measures in place.
