Sainsbury’s Expands Facial Recognition Tech in London Stores Amid Industry Crackdown

Sainsbury’s is ramping up efforts to combat theft and antisocial behavior by expanding its facial recognition technology to five more London stores this week. This move aligns with a similar initiative by Tesco, which recently secured a deal to implement advanced anti-theft technology in its Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire stores.

Since launching a trial in September at two locations, Sainsbury’s reports a significant 46% reduction in theft, harm, aggression, and antisocial behavior. Moreover, 92% of identified offenders have not returned to the trial stores, leading to safer environments for both customers and staff.

The expanded rollout covers five London locations: Dalston, Elephant and Castle, Ladbroke Grove, Camden, and Whitechapel. Sainsbury’s original trial sites in Sydenham and Bath Oldfield Park will continue using the Facewatch system.

The retailer emphasizes that this expansion is both deliberate and transparent, aiming to gauge the technology’s effectiveness when deployed across multiple nearby stores simultaneously. Clear signage is prominently displayed to inform customers about the use of facial recognition technology in these locations.

In parallel, Tesco’s trial involves reviewing CCTV footage of serious incidents at its Security Hub in Daventry. Key footage may be analyzed retrospectively using non-live facial recognition to aid investigations. Importantly, Tesco confirms that live facial recognition is not being conducted during the trial, ensuring privacy for shoppers and employees.

These developments mark a technological leap in supermarkets’ efforts to enhance security and create more reassuring shopping experiences.
