Ryanair Bars Influencer at Birmingham Airport Over Passport Validity Dispute

Social media influencer Charlotte Taundry experienced a frustrating travel disruption at Birmingham Airport when Ryanair staff refused her boarding on a flight to Dublin, citing an invalid passport.

Although her passport showed an expiry date of October 2026, airline staff claimed it was not valid because it had been issued in January 2016, exceeding the 10-year validity rule that applies to many European travel documents. Charlotte argued her passport included an additional nine months transferred from a previous document—a process allowed before Brexit—and she believed it to be valid.

She highlighted that she had recently traveled to European cities such as Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam using the same passport without issue. Despite this, she was denied entry to the Dublin flight based on the airline’s interpretation of the rules.

Initially accepting the decision, Charlotte later learned from social media commenters that Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area and follows distinct entry requirements under the Common Travel Area agreement with the UK. This means the strict 10-year rule related to passport validity does not apply in the same way for travel between the UK and Ireland.

The incident sparked a heated online debate. Some users accused Charlotte of misunderstanding the regulations, while others criticized Ryanair’s handling of the situation. Her video about the experience garnered over 258,000 views and significant engagement on social media platforms.

Commenters clarified the nuances of passport validity, noting that passports must generally be within 10 years from the date of issue and have at least three months remaining before expiration—two separate conditions. Others questioned the logic behind the 10-year rule, expressing frustration over passport validity limitations.

To date, Charlotte says she has attempted to contact Ryanair for an explanation but has yet to receive a response.
