Residents near the Granville Landfill site in Priorslee, Telford, have been advised to prepare for a temporary rise in unpleasant odours in the coming weeks. The Midlands landfill, operated by Potters (Midlands), is undertaking essential work to control landfill gas emissions, including installing permanent gas wells in a previously filled cell.
An Environment Agency spokesperson explained, “In December 2025, the operator will install permanent gas wells in the filled cell to improve long-term gas collection. While necessary, this drilling work may cause a temporary increase in odour.”
Currently, the site is still accepting waste to complete the landfill’s final cell. To mitigate emissions, the onsite gas plant actively burns captured landfill gas, which significantly helps reduce both odour and carbon emissions. The plant also supplies approximately 1 MW of electricity to the national grid.

These measures are part of the operator’s obligations under their environmental permit to manage gas and odour effectively. The Environment Agency is closely working with site operators and the local council to monitor compliance and safeguard environmental standards. Regular inspections continue to ensure these requirements are strictly followed.
A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesperson highlighted the partnership, stating, “The Environment Agency enforces the environmental permit, while the council ensures residents’ concerns are heard and addressed. We remain committed alongside the operator and regulators to tackle this important issue.”
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting any odour problems through the Environment Agency’s 24-hour hotline at 0800 80 70 60 to facilitate prompt responses.
