A highly respected Birmingham doctor, Dr Asma Mushtaq, has tragically died at the age of 34 during a mountaineering expedition in Pakistan.
Dr Mushtaq was descending Spantik mountain, often referred to as the ‘Golden Peak,’ which rises to 7,000 metres in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Shigar district when she became ill. She was reported to have suffered from high-altitude sickness and sadly passed away on Thursday, 20 August.
The experienced medic, who worked in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Heartlands Hospital, had her body remain at a camp situated over 6,000 metres high due to severe weather conditions hampering recovery efforts.

Tributes have been paid to Dr Mushtaq by her loved ones, who described her as a person of immense dedication and courage. Muhammad Abdullah, a close friend of ten years, shared his thoughts with BirminghamLive, saying: “Asma was a remarkably talented doctor, a fearless mountaineer, and above all, a deeply cherished friend. We shared many trips and memories over the years.
“Her dedication and bravery were evident, alongside her sweet, humble, and kind nature. Whether caring for her patients or tackling demanding mountain peaks, she approached life with grace and warmth.
“Her loss leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who loved her, but her gentleness, intellect, and inspiring spirit will stay with us always.”
Emma Stansfield, medical director for women’s health services at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Heartlands Hospital, expressed her sorrow: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Dr Asma Mushtaq.
“Asma was a highly respected young doctor dedicated to the care of women, babies, and their families. Her warmth and positivity touched everyone lucky enough to work alongside her. She will be greatly missed.
“Our thoughts and condolences remain with Asma’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”
