Next week, the Black Country will come together for the Reclaim the Night walk, a powerful event aimed at challenging gender-based violence and promoting safety for women and girls in public spaces.
Organized by the Safer Sandwell Partnership in collaboration with Black Country Women’s Aid, Sandwell Council, and West Midlands Police, the walk will begin at Sandwell Council House on Freeth Street, Oldbury, at 4pm on Monday, December 8.
Participants—including residents, local workers, and partner organizations—will march to denounce violence, harassment, and abuse. The event serves to reclaim public streets, demonstrate solidarity with survivors and those currently facing abuse, and celebrate the resilience of Sandwell’s communities.

This family-friendly and peaceful walk will be stewarded throughout, taking place mainly on well-lit sidewalks and streets in Oldbury. It will run from 4pm to 7pm with looping routes, allowing attendees to join or leave at their convenience.
Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Deputy Leader of Sandwell Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community, expressed her commitment: “We are proud to collaborate with our partners and communities to raise awareness, support survivors, and take meaningful action. Every woman and girl deserves to feel safe in our borough—and we will not rest until that safety is guaranteed. Our Reclaim the Night Walk, part of the Sandwell Stands 16 Days of Action campaign, sends a clear and united message: violence will not be tolerated, and help is available.”
Everyone living, working, or studying in Sandwell is encouraged to participate. To ensure proper planning and safety measures, attendees are asked to register via the Eventbrite website.
