Rachel Reeves Unveils Support Plan for 1.7 Million UK Households Facing Heating Oil Price Surge

Rachel Reeves, the Labour Party chancellor, is poised to introduce additional financial help for UK households struggling with rising heating oil costs. Heating oil, which warms and supplies hot water to approximately 1.7 million homes, is not covered by Ofgem’s energy price cap, leaving many vulnerable, especially in rural locations.

Recognizing the “unique challenges” faced by those dependent on heating oil, Reeves has tasked Spencer Livermore, financial secretary to the Treasury, with engaging rural and Northern Irish MPs to explore targeted solutions. “We’ve worked closely with MPs and stakeholders to develop a response for families excluded from the energy price cap,” Reeves told The Times.

Regarding gas and electricity bills, she indicated that government officials are reviewing various scenarios ahead of the upcoming price cap revision in July, aiming for more precise and effective assistance measures.

A Treasury insider highlighted that families reliant on heating oil cannot spread their costs over time, as refilling a tank demands a significant upfront payment. This urgency underscores the chancellor’s commitment to delivering targeted aid to low-income and vulnerable households across the nation.

Reeves’s announcement follows recent government discussions with petrol retailers amid an 18-month high in oil prices. Despite allegations from ministers about “price gouging,” the Petrol Retailers Association denied such claims and briefly considered exiting talks.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband expressed serious concern about irregularities in parts of the market, referencing earlier warnings from the competition watchdog in December—underscoring the government’s vigilance in protecting consumers during this period of escalating energy costs.
