Rachel Reeves Slashes Car Tax to £1 for Thousands, Grants Hauliers 12-Month Road Tax Holiday

Rachel Reeves, the Labour Party Chancellor, has announced a significant reduction in car tax, cutting it to a nominal £1 for thousands of drivers. In a move aimed at supporting the transport sector amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, hauliers are set to receive a 12-month road tax holiday, potentially saving up to £912 per vehicle.

This decision comes as part of a broader economic strategy to ease the financial burden on drivers and businesses following the disruption caused by the conflict between the United States and Iran. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has led to increased fuel prices, impacting motorists and hauliers alike.

The Department for Transport highlighted the challenges faced by hauliers who play a critical role in maintaining Britain’s supply chains and economic stability. Under the new measures, typical heavy lorries will save around £600, while larger vehicles can benefit from up to £912 in tax relief.

Additionally, farmers, rail freight operators, and other users of red diesel will enjoy a fuel duty cut by over a third until the end of the year—marking the lowest rates seen in over two decades. This move aims to keep operational costs manageable during a period when red diesel prices remain approximately 50% higher than before the crisis.

The government has emphasized its commitment to steady, well-considered financial policies, rejecting rushed decisions that could threaten economic stability. This targeted package of support underscores the Chancellor’s focus on maintaining growth and safeguarding key industries amid global uncertainty.
