Rachel Reeves Announces £200 Spring Cost-of-Living Payments for Struggling Households

The Government is launching a new wave of spring cost-of-living payments to help households facing financial hardship. These grants, totaling hundreds of pounds, are designed to assist families struggling to cover essential expenses such as food and energy bills.

Funds will be allocated to local authorities, which will identify and support those in urgent financial need. While technically anyone can apply, councils will prioritize individuals and families under severe financial stress, such as those coping with debt or insufficient income to meet basic living costs.

Applications for the new Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) will be accepted through local council websites starting this May. This scheme replaces the previous Household Support Fund (HSF), which in some areas, like Birmingham, offered £200 grants to qualifying households.

Applicants may need to provide evidence of income, benefits received, or savings to verify their eligibility. The amount of grant support will vary depending on local authority decisions, and additional assistance might include food vouchers or council tax reductions.

This initiative comes amid ongoing global uncertainties, including the conflict in Iran, which threatens to escalate everyday living costs. Recognizing diverse needs, the Government advises local councils to adopt a cash-first approach—prioritizing direct cash payments for essentials but retaining flexibility to offer alternatives based on individual circumstances.

This approach aims to ensure swift, effective relief reaches those most in need during this challenging period.
