RAC Reveals Major UK Supermarkets Offer Cheaper Petrol and Diesel Prices

Drivers looking to save money on petrol and diesel should consider filling up at some of the UK’s largest supermarket chains, according to the RAC. Supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s are offering fuel prices that are consistently lower than the national average.

In a recent interview with the Express, Simon Williams, RAC’s head of roads policy, explained why these supermarkets are among the best options for cost-conscious drivers. “Fuel prices are generally 3 to 4 pence cheaper at supermarkets compared to the UK average,” Williams said.

He added that supermarkets have cemented their reputation for providing good-value fuel, allowing them to dominate the market. Their high volume of fuel sales enables them to capitalize on dips in wholesale prices more effectively than other retailers who replenish their stocks less frequently.

“While there is little difference in pricing among the major supermarkets overall, regional variations can be significant, especially where independent retailers compete,” Williams noted.

According to RAC’s Fuel Watch data, Asda currently offers the cheapest supermarket fuel in the UK, with petrol prices averaging 131.7p per litre. Morrisons follows closely at 131.9p per litre, then Sainsbury’s at 132.1p, and Tesco at 132.2p per litre.

The average cost of petrol has declined slightly to 134.97p per litre at the start of November, down from 135.55p at the beginning of October.

Williams also recommended drivers keep an eye out for low-priced independent forecourts, which can sometimes offer even greater savings. “The best advice is to watch for competitive prices along your usual routes or use the myRAC app to find the best local fuel prices,” he advised.
