Fiona Beards of Pumpkins R Us in Southam, Warwickshire, explained that while her pumpkins have all ripened, they will keep for several months. She described the plant’s survival strategy, saying, “The pumpkin is a very clever plant, it starts aborting the fruit to keep the plant alive. If it’s got three fruit and it’s too hot, it will drop one off and keep the rest.”

According to Beards, this year’s crop has fared better than last year’s, possibly due to its adaptation to warmer weather.

Choosing pumpkins at a PYO patch offers families the opportunity to enjoy fresh air while searching for the perfect pumpkin to take home. Many farms provide indoor carving spaces so visitors can avoid mess at home.
