A proposal has been submitted to transform a large family residence on Prospect Road, Moseley, into a residential unit designed to accommodate up to six adults with autism and/or learning difficulties.
If approved, the detached property would be refurbished to enable the residents to live independently while receiving support from two carers working in shifts. The carers would operate on a rota system, with handovers scheduled at 8am and 10pm daily.
According to the supporting statement included in the application, the level of activity at the property would be comparable to that of a typical family of six or seven members conducting their daily routines.

“For the vast majority of the time, there would be very little externally perceptible activity associated with the property,” the statement reads. “There would be some comings and goings at staff handover times, and the residents would also partake in social, recreational and other outings, as would be expected in a residential setting.”
The care provided would be tailored individually to each occupant, with the intention of gradually enhancing their confidence and interpersonal skills.
The property, currently serving as a family home with six bedrooms and a spacious private garden, would maintain its domestic character under the proposed use.
“The resident adults would each have their own bedroom, and aside from the residents, no one else would live at the property,” the statement adds.
The application is due to be reviewed by city council planners in the near future.
