Prolific Shoplifter Jailed After Targeting Warwickshire Stores

A persistent shoplifter with a particular focus on beauty products and daily essentials has been sentenced to a year in jail after a series of thefts across Warwickshire.

John Williams, 35, of no fixed address, was first arrested in Leamington Spa in October for multiple thefts. Despite being released on bail, he continued to offend, committing an additional 39 shoplifting crimes that included food, household items, and beauty products.

Following identification by store staff, Williams was taken into custody again in November. Warwickshire Police charged him with over 60 counts of theft from shops, along with possession of cannabis.

At Coventry Magistrates Court on November 28, Williams received a 12-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay £227 in costs and surcharges.

Sergeant Matt Humphris of the Business Crime Team emphasized the impact of these crimes, stating, “Shoplifting is not a victimless offence. It harms local businesses, communities, and can fuel further criminal activity. We are committed to acting swiftly to protect retailers and their staff.”

He added that the sentence serves as a reminder that repeat offenders will face justice. The authorities also hope that Williams will access the support and rehabilitation he needs while incarcerated.

The targeted businesses are part of the Warwickshire Retail Crime Initiative (WRCI), a collaborative network of retailers sharing information and images to prevent and detect criminal activity. The WRCI played a crucial role in assisting police to locate and apprehend Williams.

Peter Guillaume, Volunteer Manager of the WRCI, commented, “Holding offenders accountable strengthens retailers' confidence in reporting crime and helps create safer communities.”
