Pregnant Birmingham Woman Brandishes Machete in Dispute with Neighbor

A pregnant woman in Birmingham caused alarm after pulling a machete on her neighbor amid a noise dispute in their block of flats in Sparkbrook. Misty McGailey, 34, confronted her neighbor Alisha Ellis following ongoing tensions over loud music late at night.

The conflict escalated one morning after Ms. Ellis reportedly ignored McGailey’s repeated requests to reduce the volume. At around 8 a.m., after the music had stopped and everyone appeared to be resting, McGailey appeared at Ms. Ellis’s flat wearing a dressing gown, visibly frustrated, and declared, “I’ve had enough.”

Court documents reveal that McGailey then produced a two-foot machete from her dressing gown and waved it near Ms. Ellis, threatening her with invasive remarks caught on CCTV. A neighbor intervened, urging McGailey to leave the premises.

The incident, which dated back to May 11, 2024, culminated in a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court on May 14, where McGailey admitted to threatening someone with a knife in a private place and affray. The court heard that prior disputes had occurred between the two neighbors over several months.

Despite McGailey’s previous criminal record—primarily theft and some violence, without weapon involvement—the judge noted that the accused was now a changed woman. Having overcome substance abuse and given birth to her son, she expressed regret for her actions and had since relocated.

Judge Samantha Crabb acknowledged McGailey’s initial request to reduce the music was reasonable and noted the impact of her mental health struggles and pregnancy on the situation. The judge accepted that McGailey’s intention was intimidation rather than actual harm.

McGailey was sentenced to 44 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months. She was also ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activity and fined £300.
