Popular Birmingham Pub Refurbishment Approved Amid Hospitality Challenges

Plans to refurbish The New Inn, a beloved pub in Birmingham’s Harborne district, have been approved by local planners amidst concerns about the struggling hospitality sector.

Joule’s Brewery acquired The New Inn in May 2024 and quickly revealed ambitious plans to revitalize the cherished local landmark. The refurbishment includes enhancements such as landscaping, covered canopies in the beer garden, and extensions at the rear and side of the building to create additional space for events.

A council officer’s report highlighted that the internal layout will be updated to better suit a modern pub environment. The proposal was found to be acceptable in principle, supporting the continued operation of the pub without raising significant issues regarding design, highway safety, or biodiversity.

While concerns about noise and disturbance were raised, the report noted that “appropriate conditions” have been incorporated to mitigate such issues. Importantly, the development respects the significance of the Conservation Area, preserving its heritage value.

At the planning meeting, Cllr Martin Brooks acknowledged the balanced approach, saying, “The report gets the balance right between residents' concerns and the needs of local businesses to thrive,” noting conditions such as regulated operating hours for the beer garden.

Cllr Gareth Moore expressed strong support for the project: “Hospitality is struggling at the moment. It’s important that we support pubs. Over the years, we’ve seen many pubs close, so it’s encouraging to see a popular venue like this receive the backing it needs to continue.”

The committee unanimously approved the refurbishment plans during the meeting.

Reflecting on the project, Joule’s Development Director Anna Brakel shared, “This has been years in the making, and we are proud to see our plans progress. The support from the Harborne community has been incredibly humbling. We are committed to preserving everything that makes The New Inn special while upgrading it to the highest standard.”

Joule’s Managing Director Vicky Colclough added, “As a small, independent brewery, this investment is a significant milestone for us. We deeply value what The New Inn means to locals and are dedicated to honoring that connection. Our goal is to do right by both the pub and the community that loves it.”
