Police Warn Against Slow Driving in Middle Lane on M6

Police are urging motorists to be vigilant about the dangers of driving too slowly on motorways, a risk often overlooked compared to speeding. While speeding remains a serious concern, law enforcement officers have noticed a rise in drivers traveling at dangerously low speeds, particularly in the middle lanes.

Warwickshire Police recently shared a warning following an incident on the M6 where a driver was stopped and fined for maintaining a speed of just 55-60 mph in the middle lane, with no slower traffic ahead. This behavior, often referred to as “middle-lane hogging,” can create hazardous conditions by forcing other drivers to overtake on the outside lanes, disrupting traffic flow and increasing accident risk.

In a Facebook post, Warwickshire Police explained, “Officers from A Unit OPU sighted a driver on the M6 Northbound in lane 2 (middle lane) driving at between 55-60 mph with no slower moving traffic or obstructions in lane 1. The driver was pulled over and ticketed for driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. They are likely to receive a driver improvement course and a fine.”

The police emphasized that the middle lane is primarily intended for overtaking or avoiding hazards. Driving significantly below the speed limit in this lane without justification is not only inconsiderate but also punishable by law, carrying penalties of up to three points on a driving licence and a £100 fine.

Drivers are reminded to keep to the left lane unless overtaking, ensuring smoother traffic flow and greater safety for all road users.
