Plans Unveiled to Transform Historic Birmingham Medical Surgery into Boutique Hotel

A historic medical surgery building in Birmingham is poised for a remarkable transformation into a 21-bedroom boutique hotel. The landmark Arts and Crafts style structure, located at the corner of Middleton Hall Road and Selly Oak Road in Kings Norton, is a Grade II listed building, recognized for its architectural and historic significance.

Built in 1905 by the acclaimed architects William Hale and Son, the building showcases exquisite craftsmanship typical of the Arts and Crafts movement. A Heritage Statement highlights the building’s intricate details, including a fitted lamp on the principal staircase, original fireplace surrounds, delicate plasterwork, and the majority of its original windows adorned with wrought iron fittings.

The renovation plan involves partial demolition and extension of the existing structure to accommodate additional guest rooms. Importantly, the alterations are designed to preserve the building’s character, with only the removal of the ground floor west wall to link the new section being proposed. The existing single-storey additions to the north and west will be removed and replaced with new, sympathetic extensions.

The developers have committed to carefully restoring and enhancing original features that have started to deteriorate, ensuring the building’s heritage is respected. While acknowledging that the building predates modern building regulations and may reveal additional repair needs during renovation, the project aims to balance contemporary requirements with preservation of historic fabric and charm.

Local residents have been invited to submit their feedback on the application by March 15, ahead of the planning committee’s decision.
