Plans Unveiled to Replace Willenhall’s Stow Heath Primary School with Modern Facility

The Department for Education (DfE) has submitted plans to Wolverhampton City Council to demolish and rebuild Stow Heath Primary School in Hill Road, Willenhall. The current school building is described as being in ‘poor condition’ and ‘no longer fit for purpose,’ prompting its replacement as part of the government’s nationwide school rebuilding programme.

The proposed two-storey, L-shaped school will be constructed on the existing play area, avoiding problematic areas such as mineshafts and river culverts under the playing field. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 school year.

A key feature of the new school will be a significantly reduced footprint, allowing for more outdoor space for pupils. The plans include a new multi-use play area, mini football pitch, and the planting of additional trees to create a more attractive and welcoming environment.

Importantly, the Rainbow Day Nursery currently on site will remain operational throughout the redevelopment.

The new facility will also incorporate an expanded 43-place unit dedicated to children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), ensuring improved support for all pupils.

To address traffic and parking concerns, a proposed one-way system will run from Hill Road to Vaughan Road alongside increased parking spaces and a dedicated drop-off zone. This aims to alleviate congestion during peak times, improving safety and convenience for families.

A statement accompanying the planning application highlights the extensive consultation process with the school community. It emphasizes the focus on meeting educational needs, enhancing the local environment, and creating an aspirational, regenerated educational establishment that serves both students and the wider community.
