Plans to Double Black Country Dental Surgery to Meet Growing Demand

The Bhandal Dental Practice in Blackheath is set to undergo a major expansion to address the soaring demand for NHS dental services in the area. Located on Birmingham Road, the clinic has submitted a planning application to Sandwell Council seeking permission to enlarge its premises by incorporating the adjacent former Barclays bank building.

If approved, the expansion will effectively double the number of dental surgery rooms from eight to sixteen, enabling the practice to serve more patients. The upgraded facility will also feature larger waiting areas, additional offices, and enhanced storage solutions to improve overall patient care and operational efficiency.

The application highlights the urgent need for increased NHS dental capacity in Blackheath, noting that many local providers are already at full capacity or not accepting new patients. Dr. Baljit Bhandal, leading the project, emphasized, “The expansion will support the growing demand for high-quality NHS dental care, ensuring local residents have better access to essential services.”

Plans include constructing a new two-storey extension to connect the existing practice with the former bank property seamlessly. Interestingly, Sandwell Council had previously approved a different proposal by Dr. Bhandal in 2024 to convert the bank into six two-bedroom flats. However, that project was never realized, and the building has remained empty since Barclays closed its Blackheath branch in April 2023—a move driven by a shift to online banking, with very few customers relying solely on the physical branch.

This new proposal aims to transform the vacant bank into a vital healthcare extension, directly benefiting the community by expanding dental services rather than residential housing. The move underscores a strategic pivot to prioritize public health needs amid changing community demands.
