A Personal Independence Payment (PIP) recipient has shared their experience to encourage others facing health challenges not to delay applying for the benefit. After living with chronic health issues for over two decades, they finally overcame their fears and applied—only to realize how much financial support they had missed out on.
The purpose of PIP is to provide financial assistance to individuals with health conditions that affect their ability to carry out everyday tasks. Eligibility depends on meeting specific criteria, often demonstrated through medical evidence.
Despite years of pain and disability, the claimant avoided applying due to anxiety about the process and a lack of recent specialist paperwork. “I started the application back in September,” they explained on Reddit. “I have had chronic health issues for 20 years and was terrified of the process.”

Previously under specialist care with multiple treatments and surgeries, they had since been discharged and left managing their symptoms with medications like morphine and diazepam. Working part-time from home had become increasingly difficult due to severe pain and fatigue.
They feared applying without fresh specialist evidence, relying only on GP records and prescriptions. Yet after completing a video assessment, they were awarded the standard rate for both daily living and mobility components of PIP.
“I feel like an idiot for not doing it years ago,” they admitted, reflecting on the relief mixed with regret for delayed claims. The video assessment was challenging emotionally, but ultimately manageable. “If you think you meet the descriptors, apply. Don’t miss out on two decades of payments like I have just because it’s scary.”
Other Reddit users responded with congratulations and shared similar stories of reluctance followed by positive outcomes. Many emphasized PIP’s consideration of fluctuating conditions and encouraged others not to let fear or misconceptions prevent them from accessing support.
One commenter described how PIP helped them regain independence, allowing easier access to pharmacies and essential errands despite ongoing illness.
The message is clear: if you believe you are eligible for PIP, taking the step to apply can unlock vital support and improve your quality of life—no matter how daunting the process may seem.
