A prospective Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimant recently expressed concerns about sending original identification documents, such as their passport and driving licence, to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) by post. The individual feared these valuable documents might be lost during transit and stated they were “not willing” to mail them. The DWP, however, had indicated that processing their claim would be delayed until the documents were received.
Seeking guidance, the claimant turned to Reddit to ask whether this requirement was typical and inquired if there were faster alternatives. They explained their situation: after applying for PIP and attempting online ID verification, they were directed to call DWP. The call revealed that insufficient information was available to verify their identity and that a 14-day wait for a verification code via post was necessary. Following that, sending original identification documents was mandatory to proceed.
Community members suggested alternatives, including visiting a Jobcentre Plus center with the documents in person or obtaining certified copies through the Post Office, which may be acceptable for such verification processes.

BirminghamLive contacted the DWP for clarification, and the department confirmed that claimants have several options to verify their identity. These include over-the-phone verification by answering Knowledge-Based Verification questions based on information the DWP already holds, mailing original documents or certified copies, and in some cases, personally presenting documents at a Jobcentre. While the PIP application process does not specifically prompt claimants to use Jobcentres, this option is available, particularly for working-age individuals.
Additionally, vulnerable claimants might qualify for visits from DWP officers to verify documents, and online verification features are accessible through the GOV.UK One Login system.
