Pharmacies across the UK are gearing up for a significant increase in demand following the launch of the Wegovy pill, the first oral GLP-1 weight loss medication approved by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Manufactured by Novo Nordisk, Wegovy offers a new option for patients seeking alternatives to injectable treatments.
The medication is introduced at a starting dose of 1.5mg, with a gradual escalation to 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg. Patients are required to maintain each dose for at least one month before increasing. Beginning Monday, the initial doses of 1.5mg and 4mg will be available in selected pharmacies as part of weight management programs for eligible patients.
A recent survey conducted by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), involving 310 pharmacies, revealed that 76% anticipate enrolling a significant number of new patients on Wegovy in the coming months. Additionally, 49% of responders reported a rise in inquiries from people eager to begin treatment since the MHRA’s approval in June.

Olivier Picard, chairman of the NPA, described this launch as a “significant day,” emphasizing the role community pharmacies will play in expanding access. “For patients unwilling or unable to use injectable medicines, this pill offers an important alternative. While the NHS rollout is progressing slowly, community pharmacies stand ready to support wider distribution, assisting eligible patients and easing obesity-related pressures on the healthcare system.”
Alongside excitement, there is rising concern over the potential for counterfeit weight loss pills entering the market. An overwhelming 97% of pharmacies surveyed expressed worries that the tablet form could facilitate the sale of unregulated or fake products. The NPA advises patients to obtain Wegovy only through licensed pharmacies following proper consultations.
Picard cautioned, “The black market for weight loss medicines is expanding, with pill formulations being vulnerable to criminal counterfeiting. Patients must be cautious of suspiciously low prices or providers that skip thorough assessments before prescribing. If anyone is dubious about online purchases, they should consult their local pharmacist immediately.”
Finally, Picard reminded patients that weight loss medication is not a cure-all. “While Wegovy can support healthy weight loss for eligible individuals, success depends on sustained lifestyle and dietary changes,” he said.
