Stargazers across the UK are in for a spectacular celestial show, as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak in the early hours of Thursday, 13 August 2026, mere hours after a captivating solar eclipse visible across the country.
This remarkable coincidence marks the first known time that the peak of a major meteor shower will occur on the same day as a solar eclipse, according to Alfredo Carpineti, space and physics editor at IFL Science and author of Invisible Rainbows. Drawing on 5,000 years of NASA eclipse data, he noted, “It’s so exciting to have these two events happening on the same day.”
The Perseid meteor shower, an annual phenomenon, occurs when Earth passes through a trail of debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, the largest such object to regularly approach our planet, measuring approximately 16 miles in diameter, as identified by the Natural History Museum.

The meteors are expected to be visible from around midnight until dawn, with the possibility of up to 100 shooting stars per hour at the shower’s peak. However, viewing conditions will vary across the UK. The Met Office forecasts clear skies predominantly over England and Wales, while cloud cover may obstruct the spectacle in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
For the best viewing experience, experts recommend finding a rural, elevated location away from city lights and gazing at the night sky at about a 60-degree angle. Dr Ashley King from the Natural History Museum advises patience, explaining, “Your eyes need time to adjust to the darkness - typically at least 10 minutes, and sometimes up to 40 minutes - before you begin to notice fainter meteors. So don’t give up too quickly.”
Additionally, considering that summer nights can still be chilly, dressing warmly and bringing a chair can enhance comfort during the extended periods of stargazing.
With these ideal conditions and some preparation, enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to witness a breathtaking display of nature’s fireworks on a night marked by two extraordinary astronomical events.
