The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Social Security Scotland have confirmed that payments for six major benefits will be made as usual next week, despite the bank holiday on Monday, June 15, 2024, in Scotland. Although it’s common for payments due on bank holidays to be paid early, this week’s payments will not be brought forward to Friday, June 12, as some had anticipated.
The Scottish government declared the June 15 bank holiday to celebrate the national men’s football team’s first qualification for a major competition since 1998, scheduled one day after their debut match.
The bank holiday typically affects payments for the following benefits:
- Adult Disability Payment (DWP)
- Carer Support Payment
- Child Disability Payment
- Pension Age Disability Payment
- Scottish Child Payment
- Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance

However, Best Start Foods payments remain unaffected by bank holidays in Scotland.
Payments for these benefits are usually made directly into bank, building society, or credit union accounts. If a payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, payments are generally processed on the working day before.
The Labour Party government advises claimants to provide their bank or building society account details when making a claim. Alternative payment methods are only available for individuals who have difficulty managing a bank account. For assistance, claimants should contact the office responsible for their benefit or, in the case of Universal Credit, call the Universal Credit helpline.
Additionally, the DWP website notes that recipients can repay benefits they do not need to keep. To do so, individuals should write to the relevant department, including their National Insurance number and details of the payment to be repaid, along with a cheque made payable to the department.
It’s important to remember that Child Benefit repayments are only required if there has been an overpayment, as outlined by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the DWP.
