More than 800,000 drivers across the UK are currently on the roads without a valid MOT, putting themselves and others at significant risk. Recent data from the DVLA reveals that millions of vehicles annually fail to comply with this vital road safety regulation, either skipping or delaying their MOT tests.
In the past three years alone, nearly 2.9 million cars have been driven with overdue MOT certificates. The West Midlands accounted for 326,000 of these cases, underscoring that the issue affects all regions. In 2024, already 791,000 vehicles have been identified as non-compliant.
Experts believe that financial pressures, especially amid the rising cost of living, are contributing to this alarming trend. Rhydian Jones, a motoring expert at Confused.com who obtained the data, emphasizes that maintaining a valid MOT is far more than a routine obligation. “It’s one of the most important ways to ensure your vehicle is safe and reliable,” he says.

Driving without a valid MOT can result not only in a fine of up to £1,000 but also in invalidated insurance coverage. More importantly, it means drivers may be unknowingly operating unsafe vehicles, which could have faults in critical areas such as brakes, tyres, and suspension.
Jones advises drivers to conduct regular checks to catch potential issues early, reducing repair costs and preventing accidents. To help manage MOT responsibilities, many garages and dealerships now offer payment plans covering MOT and servicing costs, often including reminder services to keep drivers on track.
