Since the beginning of last year, more than 25,000 drivers have been fined for speeding on Birmingham’s most problematic road for dangerous driving. The A4540 New John Street West has seen a significant surge in speeding offences, highlighting ongoing concerns about driver behaviour on this busy route.
An analysis by BirminghamLive reveals a sharp increase in penalties issued along this stretch in recent years. This should serve as a clear warning to those who regularly use the road to travel to work, schools, and shops.
Over 18,500 speeding offences were recorded on New John Street West - which runs from Lucas Circus towards Dartmouth Circus and the Aston Expressway, just north of Birmingham city centre - in 2025 alone. Additionally, approximately 7,000 further offences have been registered already this year, maintaining an average of over 1,000 recorded speeding incidents per month.

Average speed cameras monitor traffic inbound and outbound along the route, contributing to increased enforcement. BirminghamLive obtained the data through freedom of information requests submitted to Birmingham City Council.
Another area noted for high numbers of speeding offences is the Lee Bank Middleway/Belgrave Middleway section, with close to 20,000 recorded offences since the start of 2025. These two routes stand out as hotspots for speeding within the city.
This rise in enforcement coincides with Birmingham City Council’s expansion of average speed camera coverage and the recent reduction of speed limits to 30mph on several major roads. The council’s ongoing efforts aim to improve road safety and reduce dangerous driving across the city.
