Over 13,000 Drivers Caught by Speed Cameras on Busy Birmingham Road in 2025

Birmingham’s average speed cameras have recorded a staggering 90,000 speeding offences on busy city roads so far in 2025. This figure highlights the ongoing challenge of speeding on major routes throughout the city.

Among the hotspots, the A4540 New John Street West has emerged as the road with the highest number of speeding fines, totaling around 18,500 offences to November. However, it is not the only area attracting a large number of penalties.

Data obtained by BirminghamLive under freedom of information reveals that over 13,000 drivers were caught speeding on the Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway stretch. Specifically, 9,970 drivers were recorded speeding near Haden Circus Roundabout, while another 3,511 were caught heading towards Fiveways Island.

These roads, situated just south of Birmingham city centre and running close to Bristol Road, are among the city’s busiest thoroughfares, making speed enforcement critical for public safety.

Looking ahead, Birmingham plans to introduce more average speed cameras in 2026, focusing on locations such as the A45 Coventry Road and the A34 Walsall Road. These measures accompany recent initiatives to reduce speed limits to 30mph on several main routes, enhancing road safety across the city.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the city’s commitment to tackling dangerous driving: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised to take action – and this is exactly what is happening. The Coventry Road is the first of six new locations for average speed enforcement aimed at making our roads safer. There is no excuse for dangerous driving. These cameras are being installed to stop those who put others at risk by driving too fast.”
