Outdoor Screen Proposal at Stourbridge Pub Provokes Resident Opposition

An application by Marston’s PLC to expand activities at The Gigmill pub in Stourbridge has met with strong opposition from local residents. The company has requested permission from Dudley Council to amend the pub’s licence, including the installation of a temporary outdoor bar to manage crowding during busy times and the use of a large outdoor screen to show films and sporting events daily from 10am to 11pm.

The proposal will be reviewed by the council’s licensing committee on May 19, where numerous objections will be heard from nearby residents. Concerns primarily center on potential noise disturbances and safeguarding issues for children.

One resident of Gigmill Way expressed worry about the impact of sound from outdoor screenings: “The noise from the film will affect me and my neighbors. With the upcoming Football World Cup, I fear these screenings might continue into late hours, leading to early morning drinking, which would be unacceptable.”

Another resident highlighted the risks to children, stating, “Outdoor displays lack control over who is exposed to the content. This could result in children witnessing unsuitable films, inappropriate language, or adult material without parental oversight.”

The Gigmill, which reopened in April following a £360,000 refurbishment and rebranding under Marston’s ‘Grandstand’ sports-themed banner, aims to strengthen community ties by supporting amateur sports teams and providing sports entertainment.

Marston’s commented, “This brand focus is centered on offering sporting events at the premises and fostering local sport engagement to reinforce community connections.”
