One Target and Kyogo Watch – Birmingham City’s Deadline Day Focus

Birmingham City’s transfer deadline day mission is clear: secure a new centre-back. Manager Chris Davies has emphasized the need to add a fourth central defender before the window closes at 7 pm tonight.

The Blues have already made significant progress this season, signing five new players – Kai Wagner, Jhon Solis, Ibrahim Osman, August Priske, and Carlos Vicente – all of whom are making their presence felt in Championship fixtures.

Since his arrival from Philadelphia Union, Wagner has been ever-present on the pitch, while the other four gained valuable minutes and contributed to the team’s 2-0 victory at Oxford United last Saturday.

On the outgoing side, Birmingham City might see a few more departures, but according to Davies, not too many. The transfer of Willum Willumsson to NEC Nijmegen was confirmed last night.

“I don’t think we’ll be too busy,” Davies remarked. “There’s possibly one or two who will look to move on. It becomes quite unpredictable at this stage because you never know what phone call is coming through. We have been focused on strengthening central defence because we are a bit short there. That’s probably all I can foresee happening.”

A key wildcard on deadline day is the future of striker Kyogo Furuhashi. Despite scoring twice in his last three appearances, Kyogo has seen limited action recently and was an unused substitute in the game against Oxford United. Davies’ recent selections suggest that Kyogo has dropped behind August Priske, making him the fourth-choice striker.

For a player of Kyogo’s caliber, being fourth choice at a Championship club is a setback, especially with his ambitions to be part of Japan’s World Cup squad in 2026. After a challenging 2025, Kyogo faces a critical decision about his next career move.

Both Celtic and Swansea City have expressed interest in the 31-year-old forward. Birmingham City would prefer to negotiate a permanent transfer rather than a loan deal, particularly if Kyogo moves to a rival in the Championship.
