Ollie Watkins has praised Victor Lindelof as Aston Villa’s unsung hero following their stunning 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul. This win marks Villa’s first major trophy in three decades and their first European triumph in 44 years.
Watkins led the charge with a commanding performance, while goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia, and Morgan Rogers sealed the historic win. The striker celebrated earning his first medal as a Villa player and quickly credited the entire squad and manager Unai Emery for the achievement.
“It feels amazing. To perform like that was unbelievable. We really controlled the game and punished them when it mattered,” Watkins told TNT Sports. He emphasized the importance of set pieces in breaking the deadlock, praising coach Austin McPhee’s preparation that led to the opening goal.

Emery’s calm approach in the lead-up to the final set the tone for the team, Watkins noted. “He was calm, which helped us stay composed. Youri and Victor dominated midfield. Victor has even been playing in midfield for the last few games and has been unbelievable. He was man of the match today—unreal performance.”
This victory not only clinched the Europa League title but also secured Aston Villa’s spot in next season’s Champions League, marking a new chapter in the club’s history.
