Ollie Watkins has expressed his deepest gratitude to Aston Villa supporters “from the bottom of my heart” upon completing a £50 million move to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal on a three-year deal. The England international officially departed Villa Park on Sunday, marking the end of a six-year tenure at the club.
Watkins' exit follows a turbulent period, including his decision to sit out Aston Villa’s opening Premier League fixture of the season, a 4-0 defeat to Brighton, which sparked anger among fans. Nevertheless, the striker later apologised to manager Unai Emery and his team-mates. Emery has publicly affirmed that Watkins’ legacy at the club remains intact despite recent events.
During his time at Villa, Watkins made history as the club’s Premier League record scorer, netting 91 goals. He also played a key role in the club’s successful campaign to win last season’s UEFA Europa League.
In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, Watkins reflected on his journey: “Firstly, I’d like to say never did I intend, nor did I imagine my time at Aston Villa would end this way. With that being said, I’m eternally grateful for the last six years. Not only has it shaped me as a player, but as a person. We’ve been through so many ups and downs during my six seasons here. But one thing that has never changed is that I’ve given everything for this club. From my first goals in the 7-2 win against Liverpool, getting the club back into Europe, the Champions League nights at Villa Park to that unforgettable night in Istanbul.”
Watkins also acknowledged the support of his three managers during his Villa career-Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard, and Unai Emery-before concluding, “It’s time for a new chapter that I’m excited about. However, I close this chapter with a heavy heart. Villa will always mean so much to me. Thank you guys, from the bottom of my heart.”
A statement from Aston Villa praised Watkins’ contributions: “Capable of scoring different types of goals with a ruthless streak, allied to a selfless work ethic for his team’s benefit, Watkins leaves Villa having played his part in our UEFA Europa League victory and with the very best wishes of everyone at the football club.”
Watkins is the third England international to depart Aston Villa this summer, following the exits of Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa. Other first-team regulars, including Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez and Lucas Digne, have also left the club.
To fill the void left by Watkins, Villa have secured the signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.
