Ofsted Reports Positive Progress at Jewellery Quarter Academy Following Earlier ‘Inadequate’ Rating

Ofsted inspectors have provided an encouraging update after revisiting Jewellery Quarter Academy, one of Birmingham’s previously lowest-rated secondary schools. The school, which serves approximately 500 students, was rated ‘inadequate’ in quality of education and leadership and management during its last inspection in November 2024. Behaviour and attitudes, as well as personal development, were also noted as areas requiring improvement.

In a recent monitoring visit conducted in March, Ofsted observed promising signs of progress, suggesting a more hopeful future for the Albion Street institution. Inspectors highlighted improvements in both student attendance and behaviour since the last inspection.

The report emphasized that the trust managing the school has made staffing a priority, ensuring the presence of subject experts across all areas of the curriculum. Leaders have focused on raising aspirations and expectations, which has helped staff consistently implement new systems.

According to the report, “Leaders, together with trust colleagues, have focused on the right things in the right order. For example, they have prioritised increasing pupils’ levels of attendance, ensuring pupils’ behaviour meets the higher expectations, and supporting new middle leaders.”

Attendance initiatives have made it clear that regular school attendance is a shared responsibility, resulting in attendance rates nearing the national average, including for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This marks a significant improvement from previous levels.

The school has also worked hard to foster a positive behaviour culture. Staff and pupils now have a clear understanding of the behaviour policy and the heightened expectations around conduct. Staff continue to receive training to manage behaviour effectively and consistently reinforce the rules. As a result, pupils are generally polite and friendly, reporting better behaviour overall and fairer enforcement of rules.

These steps indicate that Jewellery Quarter Academy is on a constructive path toward full improvement and better outcomes for its students.
