St Francis of Assisi Catholic College in Aldridge, Walsall, has been recognized as one of the leading secondary schools in the Midlands following its latest Ofsted inspection. Inspectors commended the school for achieving ‘strong standard’ ratings in five out of six key categories, placing it just one step below the highest possible rating of ‘exceptional.’
This new grading system moves away from the traditional one-word overall ratings like ‘outstanding’ or ‘inadequate’ to provide parents with a clearer and more detailed understanding of school performance across multiple areas.
The school received ‘strong standard’ ratings in achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance. Ofsted highlighted the school’s success in supporting all pupils, particularly noting the outstanding progress of disadvantaged students, whose attainment is above national averages and rapidly closing the gap with their peers.

The report also praised the school’s culture of high attendance and positive behaviour. Leaders carefully monitor attendance patterns to identify potential issues early, allowing them to offer tailored support that addresses individual pupil needs. This approach has led to a significant reduction in persistent absenteeism over recent years. Additionally, the school fosters a respectful environment where staff and students share clear expectations for behaviour, reinforcing a positive and supportive school community.
This strong performance positions St Francis of Assisi Catholic College as a model of excellence within the region, reflecting committed leadership, quality teaching, and an inclusive atmosphere that promotes student success.
