Off-duty Heartlands Hospital worker saves grandmother after street collapse

A grandmother’s life was saved thanks to the quick actions of an off-duty hospital worker who came to her aid after she collapsed in the street.

Naima Shaharyar, a wellbeing hub co-ordinator at Heartlands Hospital, was driving along Coleshill Road in Hodge Hill when she spotted Elayne Hawkins fall while out walking her dog. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Naima immediately pulled over and discovered that Elayne was in cardiac arrest.

Despite being on her way to a late shift at the hospital, Naima calmly began administering CPR. She continued providing this crucial support until paramedics arrived at the scene. Later, Elayne’s family were informed that the CPR she received was vital in saving her life.

Elayne is currently recovering and looks forward to attending her granddaughter’s wedding before returning to her home in Canada.

Her son, Richard Hawkins, expressed deep gratitude toward Naima, saying: “Although I wasn’t present when this happened, those who witnessed it said Naima was outstanding throughout. She encouraged and gently guided another bystander who was understandably nervous, ensuring CPR was carried out properly before stepping in herself.

“We have since been told the CPR my mother received was crucial in saving her life. Knowing that my mother is here with us today means everything to our family. We cannot put into words how thankful we are to Naima. What she did was more than a kind gesture – she acted decisively at a critical moment, giving my mother the chance to continue being a part of our lives. Naima will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

Reflecting on the incident, Naima commented: “I was simply in the right place at the right time and knew I had to do whatever I could to help. It was a frightening situation, but if it had been one of my family members, I would have hoped someone would do the same. I’m so pleased to hear Elayne is doing well.

“I’m truly touched by the family’s kind words and I wish Elayne all the best as she continues her recovery.”

Dr Rifat Rashid, hospital executive director at Heartlands, praised Naima’s response: “I am incredibly proud of Naima for the calm and compassionate way she handled this critical situation. Her actions highlight just how significant early CPR can be when someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

“I am pleased to hear Elayne is recovering well and able to spend valuable time with her family.”
