Octopus Energy is encouraging its customers to take advantage of this week’s solar eclipse by reducing their electricity use between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday, 12 August. This year’s eclipse will see over 90% of the sun obscured by the moon in the UK, with the peak obscuration occurring between 6.17pm and 8.06pm - the greatest since the total eclipse of 1999.
The highest levels of the eclipse are expected in Devon, Cornwall, and western Pembrokeshire in Wales, where 94% to 96% of the sun will be covered. To mark this extraordinary celestial event, Octopus Energy is offering customers a chance to earn free electricity during the following weekend by cutting back on energy consumption during the eclipse period.
However, customers must be registered with Octopus Energy’s loyalty and rewards programme, OctoPlus, and enrolled in the Savings Sessions to participate in the scheme. The company, which serves customers in areas including Birmingham, is also running a special competition during the eclipse, offering the chance to win free solar panel installation or a cash prize of £12,000.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Customer Officer at Octopus Energy, said: “Many of us will be looking up at the sky on Wednesday evening to experience this once-in-a-generation event. But as the sun dims, the UK’s solar power production will decrease just as energy demand peaks. By shifting everyday tasks such as running washing machines or dishwashers to later in the evening, households can reduce reliance on gas power stations and earn rewards for their efforts.”
Imo Bell, a planetarium astronomer, offered advice on safely observing the eclipse: “A solar telescope provides an amazing viewing experience, but if you don’t have access to one, consider checking if your local astronomy society is organising events. Alternatively, you can use a household item such as a colander to project the eclipse safely. By holding it with your back to the sun, you can see the eclipse’s image projected onto the ground through the holes. It’s a fascinating way to watch the event without looking directly at the sun.”
