Nottingham Emerges as the Midlands' Most Troubled City for Violence and Sexual Offences

Recent crime statistics have revealed that Nottingham has overtaken Birmingham as the most dangerous city in the Midlands when considering rates of violence and sexual offences relative to population size.

Although Birmingham, as the region’s largest city, records the highest total number of offences, analysing crime relative to population provides a clearer picture of the challenges faced by each area. Two recent studies have given cause for concern regarding Nottingham’s crime situation.

Nottingham ranks sixth nationally for overall crime rate, with an offending rate of 124.9 per 1,000 residents, exceeding Birmingham’s rate of 114.2 per 1,000 people. In the national context, Birmingham holds 16th place for crime rates.

Further analysis has identified Nottingham as the Midlands city with the highest rate of sexual offences. This category includes rape, sexual assault, exposure, voyeurism, and grooming offences. Nottingham reports a rate of 5.2 sexual offences per 1,000 residents, highlighting significant challenges related to violent crime within the city.

While overall recorded crime in England and Wales has generally decreased over the past decade, sexual offences have seen a troubling increase, rising by 4% in the past year and more than doubling since 2016. This rise may partly reflect increased victim confidence in reporting such crimes.

Despite the increase in recorded incidents, conviction rates remain low. Of all recorded sexual offences last year, fewer than one in twenty (4.7%) resulted in offenders being charged. Charge rates for rape cases are even lower, with only 3.6% of reported rapes involving female victims and 1.4% involving male victims leading to charges against suspects.

These statistics highlight serious concerns about violent and sexual crime in Nottingham, underscoring the need for focused efforts to address these issues within the city.
