Notorious Birmingham Bus Lanes Catch Nearly 18,000 Drivers in Early 2026

Birmingham’s notorious city centre bus lanes have once again caught thousands of drivers out in the first five months of 2026. Close to 18,000 motorists have been penalised so far this year, indicating that confusion or disregard for the rules remains widespread.

The majority of offences occur around Moor Street Queensway, where “bus gates” — restricted zones that only buses can use — have caused significant issues for drivers. Some motorists may deliberately flout these regulations, but many are likely unfamiliar with the city’s complex road layout, unintentionally entering bus lanes while trying to navigate.

There are three key bus lane hotspots in Birmingham city centre. One lane runs northbound towards Carrs Lane, another heads southbound near Digbeth by the Bullring shopping centre, and a third operates on St Martin’s Queensway towards Moor Street Queensway.

According to freedom of information data obtained by BirminghamLive, from January through May, 8,768 fines were issued for violations near Digbeth, 7,092 near Carrs Lane, and just over 2,000 on St Martin’s Queensway. These add up to a total of 17,909 penalty notices at the three locations combined. This means an average of around 120 drivers are caught every day by enforcement cameras.

Despite these bus lanes being in place for several years, many motorists continue to fall foul of the rules. Birmingham city centre has other busy enforcement areas too, including Broad Street, which has similarly seen tens of thousands of fines. City leaders emphasize that these restrictions are intended to ensure smooth and efficient travel for buses and Metro trams — not to generate revenue.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to signage and road markings to avoid costly penalties. Those caught entering bus lanes face fines of £30, which double to £60 if unpaid after 14 days.
