Nine Million Pensioners to Receive Winter Fuel Payments; Urged to Check for Six-Digit Code in Bank Statements

This winter, nearly nine million pensioners across England and Wales are set to receive Winter Fuel Payments, aimed at helping with heating costs during the colder months. The government has extended eligibility to include all pensioners with an income of £35,000 or below, a move that benefits over three-quarters of pensioners and ensures support is directed to those who need it most.

Pensioners do not need to apply for the payment; it will be automatically credited to their bank accounts. To confirm receipt, individuals should look for the reference ‘DWP WFP’ on their bank statements, usually accompanied by the payee’s National Insurance number.

The payment amount will be £200 per household, increasing to £300 for households with someone aged 80 or over. These payments aim to ease the financial burden of heating during winter and complement the State Pension increase under the Triple Lock, which will raise pensions by up to £1,900 this parliamentary term.

Rachel Reeves, Labour Party Chancellor of the Exchequer, emphasized the fairness of this targeting approach. She stated that while it was necessary to means-test the payments to protect taxpayer funds, expanding eligibility ensures that no pensioner with a lower income misses out on vital support.

For pensioners with incomes above the £35,000 threshold, any Winter Fuel Payment received will be reclaimed automatically through PAYE or Self-Assessment tax returns. No action is required from recipients to facilitate this process. Additionally, pensioners wishing to opt out of receiving the payment will be provided with details on how to do so.

This targeted approach replaces the previous system, where all pensioners received payments regardless of income, creating a fairer distribution of resources. Approximately 2 million pensioners in England and Wales currently have taxable incomes exceeding the £35,000 limit and will therefore be subject to payment recovery if they receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

With these changes implemented, pensioners can expect certainty and timely financial support throughout this winter season.
