NHS to Offer Free Flu Vaccinations to Homeless for First Time

The NHS will provide free flu vaccinations to homeless individuals across England for the first time, under the leadership of Prime Minister Andy Burnham. This initiative aims to protect tens of thousands of people who are sleeping on the streets, in hostels, or in night shelters from potentially serious infections.

Andy Burnham, the Member of Parliament for Makerfield and newly appointed Prime Minister this summer, has prioritised tackling homelessness during his tenure. The expansion of flu vaccinations forms part of this broader commitment to support vulnerable populations.

To reach those in need, NHS England plans to deploy mobile vaccination vans and set up pop-up clinics in areas with high concentrations of homeless individuals. Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS national director for primary care and community services, emphasised the importance of this effort, noting that winter poses heightened health risks from flu and other respiratory viruses for people experiencing homelessness.

She also clarified that individuals without a permanent address can still register with a GP using the address of a day centre, hostel, or the GP practice itself. The NHS is committed to ensuring healthcare access for all, regardless of housing status.

Mr Burnham stated: “Nobody should have to sleep rough, but while people are on the streets, we have a duty to keep them safe. This NHS initiative will provide vital vaccinations, protecting some of the most vulnerable people from potentially deadly infections. We are delivering for people in crisis now, while changing the system for the long term so everyone has a route off the streets for good.”

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper added: “No-one should face flu, pneumonia or other serious illness this winter simply because they do not have a safe place to call home. Vaccinations play a vital role in protecting the most vulnerable in society, and that includes those who are currently homeless. Together, we can save lives, support the most vulnerable, and ensure our NHS is there for everyone who needs it this winter.”
