The NHS has announced a groundbreaking development for those affected by endometriosis in England and Wales: the introduction of rapid diagnostic tests available on the NHS. Two innovative tests, EndoSure and Endotest, are set to transform the diagnosis process by significantly reducing waiting times.
Currently, the average diagnosis timeframe for endometriosis in the UK stands at over nine years, stretching to 11 years for individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Dr Anastasia Chalkidou, director of the NICE healthtech programme, highlighted the urgency of this issue. She noted that the new tests offer primary care professionals advanced, non-invasive tools to identify endometriosis earlier, enabling timely and more effective treatment.
“These tests are a true gamechanger,” said Dr Gail Busby, consultant gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. She explained that rapid, non-surgical diagnosis allows for quicker treatment initiation and helps alleviate pressure on surgical services by freeing up crucial appointments and operating slots.

Endometriosis, which involves tissue similar to the lining of the womb growing elsewhere—often around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining—can sometimes affect other organs like the bladder, bowel, or even chest. Symptoms arise when these tissue patches break down and bleed but remain trapped, causing pain and other complications.
Emma Cox from Endometriosis UK emphasized that alongside these new tests, education for GPs and nurses is essential to ensure prompt recognition and treatment, ending the too-common experience of symptoms being overlooked.
This NHS rollout represents a significant step forward in improving quality of life for thousands living with endometriosis, shaping a future where delayed diagnoses are a thing of the past.
